Recently, the Dalhousie University Interdisicplinary Ph.D. Student Society held a conference entitled: "Crossing Boundaries: Moving Among, Between, and Around Disciplines" on May 26-27, 2011. My presentation was entitled: "From Il Duce to Il Luce: An Interdisciplinary Study of the Changing Paradigm of Police Executive Leadership" which will appear shortly on the IDPHD Student Society website.

My basic thesis is that modern police leadership is gradually changing from a "cops' cop" approach to chief of police selection which emphasized a more autocratic style of leadership to one which is more inclusive and alert to the broader demands of this significant chief executive officer position. I look at some of the (para) military origins of police leadership in Canada, for example within the RCMP, and consider the kinds of change to leadership selection evidenced by the new performance competencies identified by the Police Sector Council.
