When Assistant Commissioner Yates resigned his post at Scotland Yard it created a kind of slipstream that will draw other police executives and managers into the pull of this pending controversy. It appears that there is a closer relationship between the UK police and media executives and operatives than many people would be comfortable with in a democratic society. Clearly, police organizations have evolved enormously from the "old" days when there was a bitter and deep-seated distrust of the media on the part of police leaders. The "no comment" period was not healthy, of course, but it may be suggested that the new closeness behind the scenes which includes providing journalists and editors with access to intercepted information on public figures is a bridge too far.
