Miami-Dade Police Union Agrees to Pay Cuts

In a move that is perhaps a bellwether for circumstances to follow in Canada, the police union has, albeit most relunctantly, agreed to pay cuts in order to save jobs:

Miami-Dade Police Union Pay Cuts

This concession, which covers a three-year period, will save the county $56 million. It is certainly a vast relief to some of the department's newer officers.

In the past, Canadian police associations have taken inspiration from south of the border for some of the aggressive campaigns launched to garner support for the police unions. One may be permitted to wonder if any Canadian police association executives are contemplating the wisdom or prudence of this type of approach to address the growing lack of sustainability of the existing policing model in this country.

Police unions constitute an element of the overall leadership of policing in Canada. They have a pivotal role in ensuring that public safety is something achievable. They are also part of the equation fo ensuring that public safety is something that is affordable.
